Kristen Wiig recalls IVF before surrogacy as the "most difficult time in her life"

Actress and comedian Kristen Wiig recently opened up about her struggles with infertility, IVF and surrogacy in an interview with InStyle.

Kristen Wiig maintains an overall private profile with little to no social media presence as such, and although news outlets reported that she welcomed a pair of twins earlier this year with fiance, Avi Rothman, the couple kept the news under wraps until recently.

"We tried to keep the process private for as long as possible, because it is a very private thing," she told the publication.

Speaking with the magazine last week, Kristen finally confirmed the news that the couple did indeed bring home an adorable set of twins sometime around late last year, who are now 9 months old.

The Bridesmaid star added that her journey towards motherhood had been extremely challenging which is one reason why they did not indulge in oversharing about it. The couple spent about 3 years trying to conceive through IVF however, as the TTC community would know, it's indeed a very trying time most of which is spent waiting anxiously for lab results and phone-calls from the doctor's office.

Describing it as "the most difficult time in her life", Kristen recalls feeling a rollercoaster of emotions during her IVF treatment phase. "Occasionally there would be a good month, but then it was just more bad news. There was a lot of stress and heartache.”

The former Saturday Night Live star maintained that she wasn't entirely prepared to opt for alternative routes such as surrogacy, however she also believes that now that they're at the other end of the finish line, it was just meant to happen this way.

Kristen and Avi were eventually able to find an amazing surrogate to carry their children for them. Kristen admitted to feeling nervous about the decision initially but was also a strong believer in things happening the way they're supposed to happen.

"As private as I am and as sacred as this all is, what helped me was reading about other women who went through it and talking to those who have gone through IVF and fertility stuff."

Decisions like IVF and surrogacy are of monumental importance in your life and it's important to learn from people's experiences in order to be able to make the most informed choice and also feel less isolated. Kristen told InStyle that the reason why she finally did decide to divulge all the details about her journey to parenthood is because she herself found comfort and solace in talking to people who've been through similar experiences and kind of finding that safe space in the TTC community.

We wish Kristen and Avi the best of luck in raising their two beautiful kids and hope they can continue to be there for others out there embarking on their family building journey.
